Description: Thurzo House in Banska Bystrica is situated in the historic heart of the town, in the Square of the Slovak National Uprising.
Thurzo House Banska Bystrica with Social-Scientific Exhibition is a part of Central - Slovakian Museum Banska Bystrica.
Thurzo House is an original gothic house (called "Mittelhaus").
In 15th - 16th century the house was acquired by the Thurzo family who created die Thurzo-Fugger copper company with the Fugger family (bankers from Augsburg).
In the second half of the 16th century the house was reconstructed. At that time many Italian Renaissance elements appeared on the front of the building (e.g. the sgraffito on the facade).
The Social Science Exposition is focused on the historic changes of region of Banska Bystrica from the oldest times of the stone age, through the Middle Ages to the modem age till the beginnings of 20s' century.
The exposition offers rich amounts of archeological exhibits, medieval arms, coins and copies of historic documents in 12 rooms. The museum offers also gothic art, the mining, guilds, crafts and manufactures. On the second floor is exhibited bourgeois furniture and ethnographic material. Very interesting is the Green Hall - part of fresco embellishment from second half of the 15th century, the wooden joist ceiling and the renaissance lunette vaulting with the stucco embellishment.
